JYMCast #7: Kevin’s Poem

As this week’s JYMCast is a little bit different, I thought I’d post the shownotes (which you can see every week here) since they include the text of the poem featured in this week’s show.

JYM ON LOCATION: Kevin’s Poem

“Five Chocolate Chip Cookies and a Cup of Orange Juice”

By Kevin

May 2007

She asked for five cookies, / Some for here, and some to go. / Then she got a cup of orange juice, / - “Nutritious and delicious” as she called it - / And sat down.

Julia laughed and talked throughout her meal. / She then turned to me and said, / “I had children once, in fact, I had three. / My boys are 29 and 22, but I don’t see them anymore… / They walk by my house, but never to my door.”

And Julia had a daughter, who she loved, / But could not see, / Because of the things she had done in her life / It was as if she had zero children, not three.

In her young life she drank and smoked, / Made too many mistakes, / So now her food comes from a Soup Kitchen, / Cookies and OJ are what she takes.

Her girl turns seven on this day, / An anniversary of when she was taken away…

Julia is trying to change her life, / Trying to be a good mother and wife, / She gives up those things she did and turns to religion.

God is her passion now, and he sends her angels each night, / In forms of white cats, or doves in great flight.

She wishes she had yesterday, / But looks to tomorrow, / And is a warrior fighting through the sin and the sorrow.

Now Julia leaves with her cookies and OJ, / And says to the workers there, / “Thanks to you people who made my day.”

Then she stumbles on her dress, / And walks out her door, with one last thing to say. / “Thank you once more, and I’ll see you next Saturday!”

Jerry’s Departure

In case you missed it, last week in the bulletin I wrote an announcement regarding the future of my employment at St Joseph Church.  Here’s the text of the announcement:

 An Announcement from Jerry Harrington

I write today to let you know of a decision my wife and I have made.  We have two small children, a 3 year old boy and 10 month old girl.  My wife is a nurse, working nights.  For the last few years we’ve been doing the ‘primary care juggle’ wherein one of us is with the kids while the other goes to work and vice versa.  Two things have happened that lead us to this announcement.  First, my son has reached an age that he’s beginning to ‘push back’ against the juggle.  Second, my wife has recently been offered some exciting career opportunities.  Thus, we have decided to restructure our home, with my wife working full time and I working as a stay at home dad.  I recently submitted letters of resignation to Fr. Hennessey, to be effective August 1.
The first thing I’d like to make clear is my continued affection and admiration for St Joseph Parish.  We remain members of this family of faith.  I will shout from the mountains what a great place this is to minister!
Second, while I’m leaving youth ministry at St Joe’s, youth ministry is not leaving St Joe’s.  We are aggressively seeking an excellent successor for me and hope the Spirit provides the right candidate soon.  In the meantime, LIFT will continue thanks to the excellent work of Mrs. Linda Popeck, who helped found it and has organized it behind the scenes for years, as well as the LIFT Board, the amazing group of middle school parents who manage the monthly events.  Challenge Club will continue under the wonderful administration of Mrs. Beth Spagna, our Club President.  I’m in conversation with several dedicated parents and adult volunteers to form a SWAT Board to continue growing our high school youth group with regular gatherings like monthly Gym Nights and Pray & Go outings.  I am confident that youth ministry will continue strong in this parish.
Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and deep appreciation to this family of faith.  So many of you have encouraged, supported, and assisted me in these last two years.  I have learned so much about myself and ministry.  I cannot thank you enough.  My wife and I were parishioners of St Joe’s for years before I came to work here.  We plan to continue to be.  Thus, I’m not really saying ‘goodbye,’ but rather ‘hello’ to a positive change to benefit my family.  I am saying this: let’s all pray together for the swift arrival of the right person to take over the work I’m leaving and grow it even better than I could have!  I look forward to watching it grow with you.

In addition to the above, I’d just like to reassure that this website will continue as will the events that we’ve scheduled for next year.  The LIFT Board of dedicated adults will continue to manage events.  Mrs. Popeck will continue to organize everything as she has for years.  LIFT ran really well before I got here and will continue to do so after my departure.

If you have any questions, or would like to offer your help in keeping things going, please email (jharrington@stjoseph-libertyville.org) or call 847.990.1235.

Pile of Boxes for Soldiers in Iraq!LIFT March Event Results

On Saturday, March 8, about 35 LIFT kids came together to help a young Eagle Scout candidate complete his Eagle project: 100 Boxes for 100 Soldiers.  Eliciting financial donations from the parish, our goal was to sponsor 100 boxes to be sent to Illinois soldiers overseas in Iraq. Thanks to the enormous generosity of our parishioners, we not only acheived our goal but actually doubled it!  Pictured at left is the final result: 202 boxes packed, labeled, and stacked ready for post office pick up Monday morning! The participants did an amazing job of assembly line packing the items into each box, making beautifully personalized cards of support to the soldiers, and putting it all together to create the pile pictured.  Our congratulations to all who were involved, especially Kyle who should definitely earn his Eagle rank for this one!

LIFT General Information

Are you new to LIFT?  Perhaps a fifth grader or parent of a fifth grader who was just invited to the Broomball Event?  We thought we’d put on the site the LIFT General Information Sheet that we mail out at the beginning of each year to explain what LIFT is all about.  We’ve also put the sheet on the forms page for easy reference in the future.
